David L. Graven papers, 1936-1992 (bulk 1949-1991).

The papers include biographical data, correspondence, minutes and reports, newspaper clippings, recorded interviews, legal briefs and writings, seminar files, speech files, and political campaign and convention files, which document the personal, professional, and civic life of David L. Graven, a Freeborn County (Minn.) assistant attorney (1957-1963), University of Minnesota law professor (1963-1974), and Minneapolis trial lawyer (1974-1991) specializing in real estate, criminal, and public affairs law. Active in state politics, Graven campaigned for a seat in the U.S. House in 1962 and for the Minnesota governorship in 1970. Graven was also instrumental in founding the independent group Minnesotans for Durenberger which helped elect Durenberger to the U.S. Senate in 1982. Political files include evidence of Graven's campaigns, Durenberger's 1982 campaign, and Graven's participation as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party State Central Committee. Active in public policy dialogues, Graven was appointed to or voluntarily served on a variety of professional and civic groups including the Governor's Human Rights Committee, the Uniform Law Commission, the Metropolitan Council, the Citizens League, the Price of Life Task Force under the Minnesota Coalition on Health Care Costs, the Hennepin County Bar Association, the District of Minnesota branch of the Historical Society of the United States Courts, and the University of Minnesota. While not all of these are documented by the papers, his participation with the Citizens League, the Minnesota Coalition on Health Care Costs, and the Historical Society of the U.S. Courts are well represented. Particularly well documented are Graven's efforts in the areas of bioethics and open meeting law.

Minnesota's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) was officially formed on April 15, 1944, the result of a merger of the existing Democratic Party and the Farmer-Labor Party.
